Don’t miss out — Dior Ashley Brown is an award-winning emcee, poet, and activist whose work fuses music and social change. A powerhouse of the D.C. arts scene, she uses her voice to uplift women and honor the roots of hip-hop.
EVENT IS FREE WITH RSVP.
Join UMAW on September 29 in Washington D.C. at DC9 for a show with full performances from Julia Holter, Dior Ashley Brown, and Alexia Roditis (from Destroy Boys).
The show is to celebrate and build support for the Living Wage for Musicians Act, which will be reintroduced by Rep. Rashida Tlaib earlier in the day. We'll have UMAW organizers on site to talk about the legislation and our efforts to build musician power.
If the event reaches capacity, RSVPs will be first-come, first in. Donations are encouraged at the show.
The Living Wage for Musicians Act (LWMA) would create a new streaming royalty paid directly to artists, ensuring that artists and musicians can build sustainable careers in the digital age. The new royalty would be an additional revenue stream on top of artists’ existing royalties. Read more about the bill here.
The bill is built to pay artists a minimum of a penny per stream, an amount calculated specifically to provide a working class artist a living wage from streaming.
Rep. Tlaib and former Rep. Jamaal Bowman first introduced the Living Wage for Musicians Act in March 2024. Since then, the legislation has built enormous momentum, as thousands of artists, music workers, venues, record labels, and others across the music industry have declared their support. Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Thompson, Omar, and Ramirez also signed on as co-sponsors.
We got another major boost this May when the New York City Council passed a resolution calling for fair pay in streaming and endorsing the LWMA.
Now Rep. Tlaib is reintroducing the LWMA, and we need to keep up the momentum. RSVP here to join us on Sept 29 at DC9 for an incredible show and to learn more.
With everything going on in DC right now, there's no better time to come together and build with each other.
Something Like A Town Hall is meant to provide the creative and small business community of the DMV with resources and a strong network to grow with.
Make sure you RSVP so we can keep this movement going.
